The security services industry has evolved tremendously over the last few decades. We have witnessed the important transition from security guard to security officer; an increased emphasis on safety and customer service; advancements in training and career development, and the introduction of technology as part of the total security solution.
The perception of security changed drastically on September 11, 2001. The increased visibility of the many components of creating safe workplaces and communities brought more attention to security’s critical role. Security has also gained attention thanks to recognition of our learning and development focus and the expansion of public-private partnerships.
Security officer recruiting has also advanced as more emphasis is placed on specialized services and our industry strives to attract and recruit candidates with significant experience in the military or law enforcement. Additionally, background screening and drug testing have enabled us to secure the best candidates, and more focus is given to aligning candidates’ experiences with security program needs.
Technology also has altered the face of the industry by identifying new ways to create efficient officer procedures and collect data to develop strategies. The answer to a security challenge can be a combination of personnel, processes and technology. There is no longer a one-size-fits-all approach to security, and there never should be.
Throughout all of these developments, the central element of every successful security program is the security officer. Everything we do to support and engage them is critical. These individuals dedicate themselves to creating safe and secure environments every day. These often unsung heroes take on a range of responsibilities from welcoming guests and guiding us to our destinations, to answering questions and interacting with local law enforcement, to leading evacuations and responding to medical emergencies.
Our industry is ever-changing and will continue to evolve. We have come a long way, and I can only imagine where we will be in another 10 or 20 years. Read this article on and consider what might be next for us.
As we start a New Year, what industry advancements do you view as having the most impact on your security program?
